At the time the baby is sick, every parent will feel anxious and worried. Although the disease affecting only a cough and cold, but that does not mean the disease do not need to watch. So when should the parents need to be vigilant when cough or cold symptoms are not just ordinary?

A pediatrician from Cleveland Clinic Dr.Elaine Schulte explained, cough in children is generally caused by an upper respiratory infection. Usually, just by using a humidity regulator, complaints such as nasal congestion can be resolved soon.

"In general cough can last up to 10 days. But parents often become nervous when the cough is already disturbing resting child, accompanied by fever or coughing has begun to spread in the house," said Schulte, who is also a member of the Academic Pediatric Association.

He said the way a parent can do is to keep the back of the throat moist. In children with greater age, can be helped by using drugs.

However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), cough medicine is usually less effective in children younger than six years, even feared serious side effects.

"When children are always coughing, help them to eject phlegm, because the mucus trapped in the lungs can lead to pneumonia," he said.

Schulte suggested, if the cough is still going on more than 10 days, you should consult the child to the doctor to make sure the child is not suffering from pneumonia, sinus infection, or whooping cough.
